Swim of the Week: Matsumoto's 1:45.1 JPN Record in 200 Free
Matsumoto's 1:45.1
SWIMSWAM
Jan. 22, 2021 — The men’s 200 free might be one of the most wide-open races in the Olympic year. China’s Sun Yang won the 2016 Olympic gold medal and both the 2017 and 2019 World Championships. But with Sun’s status in doubt amid an ongoing doping case, the battle for Tokyo Olympic gold could go in any direction. Japan’s Katsuhiro Matsumoto is making a name for himself in that gold medal hunt. The 23-year-old shaved a tenth off his own national record this week, going 1:45.13 to win the Kosuke Kitajima Cup in Tokyo. That’s the best time in the world this season, supplanting former leader Alexander G ...

Instead of the normal bevy of teams, this iteration of the annual invite featured only the hosts Notre Dame and Missouri State on the men’s side, with the Fighting Irish completing a clean sweep and winning 268-86. With still almost a month to go until ACCs, Notre Dame got some big performa ...

Ian Thorpe: “Everyone in the World is Swimming the 200 Freestyle Wrong” (Video)
SWIMMING WORLD NEWS
Jan. 20, 2021 — Australian Swimming legend Ian Thorpe believes that his sensational 1:44.06 World record over 200 metres freestyle in 2001 remains one off the three most competitive four-length swims of the past two decades because “everyone in the world is swimming the 200 freestyle wrong.” “You can’t swim 150 meters easy and then turn it into a sprint. You are going to limit what time you are going to do,” says Thorpe, Olympic 400m freestyle champion at Sydney 2000 and 200m and 400m gold medallist at Athens 2004. Now 37, he believes that the only way the swimmer who cannot match the rare backend s ...

SWIMSWAM
Jan. 17, 2021 — After he stormed home with a final 50 split of 26.54 in the prelims, we knew Kieran Smith would be tough to beat in tonight’s men’s 200 free final. That proved to be true, as Smith led from start to finish, winning in a time of 1:47.36. That swim falls just shy of his 1:47.29 from the U.S. Open, a time that ranks the University of Florida junior 18th in the world for the 2020-21 season. Swimming out in Lane 1, Townley Haas was near the front of the pack throughout the race, moving past Carson Foster and holding off Zane Grothe on the last length to snag second in 1:48.81. This would ordinarily present an opportunity for some hard racing on the road to the British Championships, which double as Olympic trials, next month in London. This, though, is no ordinary year with Tokyo 2020 increasingly under threat. The competi ...
