A member of the German Olympic team in Rio 2016, Heidtmann has qualified for Tokyo 2020 on the clock, confirmation of selection cancelled along with Germany’s Olympic swim trials due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The conversation, which took place before Australia and Canada set dominoes falling on the way to a likely postponement of Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The Sun Yang story continues as his coach Denis Cotterell has ended his tenure with the Chinese Swimming Association after the full report of why Sun was handed an eight year ban was released to the public last week. His Chinese supporters have also turned on him and apologized to his chief rival Mack Horton for how they treated him online after the podium protest at the 2019 World Championships.

It’s a backstroker’s world; we just live in it. Backstrokers Ryan Murphy and Regan Smith lead the 2020 Pro Swim Series as the Des Moines stop produced 16 of the top 20 swims of the Pro Swim Series season in FINA points. Smith already led the series by a pretty-much-insurmountable margin. In fact, after her 986-point 100 back swim in Knoxville, we did some fun math to project just how improbable it would be that anyone could beat that swim over the rest of the tour.

Michael Andrew blasted out to a lifetime best in the 200 IM at 1:56.83 , ranking 4th in the world this season. Andrew split the race 24.07/29.15/33.47/30.14, swimming his free leg within a second of his back leg. Coming in for second with his strong finishing free was Andrew Seliskar , now ranking 9th in the world this season at 1:58.01. Germany’s Jacob Heidtmann finished in third place also under 2 minutes at 1:59.78, just making the top 25 times in the world. Andrew is now the fastest American in the 200 IM this season.

Regan Smith will get another chance to show what she’s got in Saturday night’s final day of the TYR Pro Swim Series stop in Des Moines. She enters the evening as the top seed in the 100 backstroke, an event where she holds the world record, after a morning swim of 58.79 seconds. The second seed is Olivia Smoliga in 59.60 with Kathleen Baker also under a minute in the morning prelims.

The final prelims session of the 2020 Pro Swim Series in Des Moines will feature the 100 back, 200 breast, 200 IM, and 50 free. After winning both the 200 back and taking 2nd in the 100 fly on Friday, Regan Smith will cap off her Des Moines campaign with her top seed in the 100 back.

Germany’s Jacob Heidtmann and Marius Kusch , both training under the guidance of coach David Marsh in San Diego, raced inside the cut for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in action at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Des Moines last night . For Heidtmann, a 4:12.40 victory over 400m medley, produced a provisional ticket to Tokyo with a bonus card in the mix: a second shot in the Olympic pool four years after he was disqualified at his first Games in Rio after finishing fifth fastest in heats.

Regan Smith, the teenage phenom, flourished on Friday night at the USA Swimming TYR Pro Series stop in Des Moines, Iowa. She competed in the 200 backstroke and 100 butterfly in her latest tuneup competition for the United States Olympic Trials.

Three winners from Thursday night at the TYR Pro Swim Series Des Moines are set to show down Friday night in the women’s 200 freestyle. Katie Ledecky earned the top seed in the morning with a time of 1:56.19. She’s chasing her third title of the meet, after winning the 1,500 free and 400 free the last two nights. The second seed is Hali Flickinger, winner of Thursday’s 200 butterfly, in 1:59.16. She’s just .02 ahead of 100 free champ Siobhan Haughey, who Friday made the move to ISL club Energy Standard .

German Olympian Jacob Heidtmann hit his qualifying time for Tokyo 2020 in a 200 free time trail at the 2020 Pro Swim Series in Des Moines. Heidtmann, who competes for Team Elite, posted a 1:46.87. He was within hundredths of his lifetime best 1:46.83 from the 2018 European Championships. That’s a little over a tenth under the German Olympic Qualifying Standard, which is set at a 1:47.02.
