TYR Pro Swim Series: What We Learned From the First Prelims/Finals Meet of the Year Usually a prelims/finals meet in mid-January would be another ho-hum competition in the leadup to the Olympic Trials. But this past weekend’s Pro Swim Series in San Antonio and Richmond was a welcomed sight for swim fans due to the fact it was the first legitimate prelims/finals meet in a long-course venue since March 2020, a week before the COVID-19 pandemic took hold of the United States. It was a fitting end to the meet for Kieran Smith , who picks up his third win in as many days with a new personal best time of 1:59.38 in the 200 IM. That showing lowers his previous PB of 1:59.56, set way back at the 2017 World Juniors, and ranks him 13th in the world this season. Known for his freestyle prowess, the 20-year-old distanced himself from the field on back, splitting 29.97, before closing strong with splits of 34.83 and 28.92 on breast and free. 2021 TYR Pro Swim Series: Day Four Prelims Highlighted By Justin Ress, Madisyn Cox The final day of prelims of the TYR Pro Swim Series in San Antonio and Richmond featured a handful limited fields, but the evening finals will feature some quality matchups. Michael Andrew blasted out to a lifetime best in the 200 IM at 1:56.83 , ranking 4th in the world this season. Andrew split the race 24.07/29.15/33.47/30.14, swimming his free leg within a second of his back leg. Coming in for second with his strong finishing free was Andrew Seliskar , now ranking 9th in the world this season at 1:58.01. Germany’s Jacob Heidtmann finished in third place also under 2 minutes at 1:59.78, just making the top 25 times in the world. Andrew is now the fastest American in the 200 IM this season.

The Cal men had another dominant showing at the Pac-12 Championships as they won the 2020 team title. That marks their 3rd-straight conference victory. This is their 8th title in program history and their 5th under Head Coach Dave Durden . The Bears took down several Meet Records, including records in the 400 free relay, 200 medley relay, and an 11-year-old Meet Record in the 200 free relay. Reigning NCAA Champion Ryan Hoffer was among the top performers for Cal. He won titles in the 50 free, 100 fly, and 100 free.

Cal’s Reece Whitley completed a sweep of the breaststroke titles on Saturday night at the 2020 men’s Pac-12 Championships. Whitley, a sophomore, dominated the 100 breast, winning by over 3 seconds in 1:49.85. That took down the Pac-12 Meet Record set by Cal’s Andrew Seliskar last season. Seliskar went on to become the NCAA Champion in this event. This was Whitley’s first time breaking 1:50. He took nearly a second off his former lifetime best of 1:50.62 from last season’s Pac-12 meet.

Regan Smith will get another chance to show what she’s got in Saturday night’s final day of the TYR Pro Swim Series stop in Des Moines. She enters the evening as the top seed in the 100 backstroke, an event where she holds the world record, after a morning swim of 58.79 seconds. The second seed is Olivia Smoliga in 59.60 with Kathleen Baker also under a minute in the morning prelims.

World Championships medalist Michael Andrew had a big swim on Saturday night at the 2020 Pro Swim Series in Des Moines. Andrew raced to a 1:56.83 in the 200 IM, finishing over a second ahead of the field. That dropped over half a second from his former best. NCAA Champion Andrew Seliskar took 2nd in 1:58.01, taking a couple of tenths off his lifetime best from 2018. Andrew’s former best was a 1:57.49 from the Richmond Pro Swim Series last April.

The final prelims session of the 2020 Pro Swim Series in Des Moines will feature the 100 back, 200 breast, 200 IM, and 50 free. After winning both the 200 back and taking 2nd in the 100 fly on Friday, Regan Smith will cap off her Des Moines campaign with her top seed in the 100 back.

Cal men's swimming sophomore Hugo Gonzalez swam to a dominant win and a new Pac-12 Championships record in the 400 individual medley Friday night, going 3:36.60; the previous record was 3:38.65, set by Cal's Andrew Seliskar in 2018. The Spanish Olympian split 49.88 on butterfly, 55.37 on backstroke, 1:00.43 on breaststroke and 50.92 on freestyle. Gonzalez was already the third-fastest performer in history with his 3:35.76 swim from his freshman season at Auburn.

Regan Smith, the teenage phenom, flourished on Friday night at the USA Swimming TYR Pro Series stop in Des Moines, Iowa. She competed in the 200 backstroke and 100 butterfly in her latest tuneup competition for the United States Olympic Trials.

Three winners from Thursday night at the TYR Pro Swim Series Des Moines are set to show down Friday night in the women’s 200 freestyle. Katie Ledecky earned the top seed in the morning with a time of 1:56.19. She’s chasing her third title of the meet, after winning the 1,500 free and 400 free the last two nights. The second seed is Hali Flickinger, winner of Thursday’s 200 butterfly, in 1:59.16. She’s just .02 ahead of 100 free champ Siobhan Haughey, who Friday made the move to ISL club Energy Standard .
