Jan. 19, 2021— TYR Pro Swim Series: What We Learned From the First Prelims/Finals Meet of the Year Usually a prelims/finals meet in mid-January would be another ho-hum competition in the leadup to the Olympic Trials. But this past weekend’s Pro Swim Series in San Antonio and Richmond was a welcomed sight for swim fans due to the fact it was the first legitimate prelims/finals meet in a long-course venue since March 2020, a week before the COVID-19 pandemic took hold of the United States. USA Swimming held the U.S. Open across nine different sites in late November, but the meet was timed finals only ...

Kathleen Baker: "First time in a hot second that my freestyle leg was faster than my backstroke"
SWIMSWAM
Jan. 18, 2021— Kathleen Baker made her move on the backstroke leg of the women’s 200 IM, giving her over a second buffer on Madisyn Cox that she was able to maintain the rest of the way. Looking at the splits, the two were very close on all the other strokes, but Baker’s 32.49 back leg made all the difference. The 23-year-old Baker finished in a time of 2:10.30, moving past Cox to become the second-fastest swimmer in the world this year, with only Australian Kaylee McKeown (2:08.23) ahead of her. It’s also Baker’s third-fastest performance ever, having been 2:08.32 in the summer of 2018 and 2:08.75 ...

Jan. 18, 2021— Coming off her swim-off victory over Isabel Ivey to get into the ‘A’ final, Olivia Smoliga attacked the women’s 200 free from the front out in Lane 8, holding the lead through the 150 with Regan Smith , Madisyn Cox and Abbey Weitzeil hot on her tail. Cox had a solid closing 50 in 30.75, managing to out-touch Smith for the win in a time of 1:59.42 to Smith’s 1:59.49. Cox swam a season-best of 1:58.97 at the U.S. Open in November. Smith’s time is her third-fastest ever, while Smoliga held on for third in 1:59.91, her fourth time breaking into the 1:59s. Olivia Smoliga rocketed off the ...

SWIMMING WORLD NEWS
Jan. 18, 2021— 2021 TYR Pro Swim Series: Kathleen Baker Dazzles in 200 IM; Kieran Smith Grabs Third Win So much is made of Kathleen Baker’s prowess in the backstroke events, and rightfully so. After all, Baker is a former world-record holder in the 100 backstroke and has an impressive collection of international hardware from the stroke. That status, though, sometimes causes her talent in the individual medley to go overlooked. Closing out her weekend at the TYR Pro Swim Series in San Antonio, Baker put together a superb performance in the 200 individual medley, as she prevailed in 2:10.30. That ti ...

2021 Pro Swim Series – San Antonio: Day 4 Finals Live Recap
SWIMSWAM
Jan. 17, 2021— The final night from the San Antonio Pro Swim should be another exciting one — though there will be a few sparsely populated heats. World record holder Regan Smith has scratched out of the women’s 200 back, as has Emma Weyant , leaving just six swimmers in that event tonight. Phoebe Bacon and Isabelle Stadden come in as the top two seeds. Will Grant has also dropped out of the men’s 200 back, meaning just four will contest that race, though it remains intriguing with Ryan Murphy , Shaine Casas and Austin Katz in the field. Other key matchups to watch for tonight include Abbey Weitzei ...

Madisyn Cox's Swimming Career Now Depends on Getting Med School Deferred
SWIMSWAM
March 31, 2020— With timelines pushed back a year for the next Olympic Games in Tokyo , swimmers are re-adjusting their preparations for the new schedule. However, some swimmers, like Madisyn Cox , had plans for their lives after swimming that could now conflict with a 2021 Games. In 2019, Cox announced her intention to go to medical school after the summer of 2020 (Olympics or not) and stop swimming . She’ll now have to figure out if she can defer admissions to a school for a year to realize her Olympic aspirations or end her competitive career. “As of right now, I’m not exactly sure what [my plans ...

March 30, 2020— The coronavirus pandemic had caused the world to go into a frenzy the last few weeks. Athletic events were being cancelled left and right. Facilities were closing down. Sports, what was once a form of escape during times of panic like these, was suddenly completely wiped away from our lives in a matter of what felt like the blink of an eye. With roughly four months still to go to the Olympic Games, the coronavirus pandemic could not have come at a worse time. Athletes everywhere were struggling to find places to train. Gym equipment became nearly impossible to get their hands on. Whi ...

SWIMSWAM
March 9, 2020— Regan Smith earned the most prize money of any athlete for a second-consecutive Pro Swim Series stop, and she now leads the entire series in earnings at $13,000. Smith didn’t even swim the season-opening stop at Greensboro, but put up identical $6500 totals in Knoxville and Des Moines to earn the series lead. Smith is still under amateurism restrictions on how much of that money she can accept, though, given that she still plans to swim for Stanford in the NCAA.

SWIMMING WORLD NEWS
March 8, 2020— The final night of the TYR Pro Series stop in Des Moines was very much a sneak preview of what is to come at the United States Olympic Trials in June, especially in the women’s 100 backstroke.
