SWIMSWAM
Jan. 19, 2021— The men’s 1500 freestyle was a mirror image of the women’s event, this time featuring Zane Grothe and Will Gallant . The main difference was that Grothe made his move a little bit earlier than McHugh, pulling away from Gallant around the 1000m mark. Grothe, 28, finished in a time of 15:10.29, stacking up as his fastest swim since July of 2019 while also making him the second-fastest American this season. The time is a marked improvement compared to his 1500 done at this time last year in Richmond (15:19.77). Also like McHugh, Grothe negative split the event, going 7:36.23/7:34.06 for ...

SWIMMING WORLD NEWS
Jan. 18, 2021— 2021 TYR Pro Swim Series: Ally McHugh and Zane Grothe Nail Down 1500 Free Wins Remember Ally McHugh for the 1500 freestyle, when the event makes its debut at the United States Olympic Trials in Omaha in June. Closing out her work at the TYR Pro Swim Series, McHugh put together a strong outing in the metric mile on Sunday night, winning in San Antonio in 16:12.87. That effort was just ahead of the 16:13.09 performance recorded by Ashley Twichell at the Richmond stop. A World Championships qualifier for the United States in the 400 individual medley, McHugh will also look to qualify fo ...

SWIMSWAM
Jan. 17, 2021— The final night from the San Antonio Pro Swim should be another exciting one — though there will be a few sparsely populated heats. World record holder Regan Smith has scratched out of the women’s 200 back, as has Emma Weyant , leaving just six swimmers in that event tonight. Phoebe Bacon and Isabelle Stadden come in as the top two seeds. Will Grant has also dropped out of the men’s 200 back, meaning just four will contest that race, though it remains intriguing with Ryan Murphy , Shaine Casas and Austin Katz in the field. Other key matchups to watch for tonight include Abbey Weitzei ...

SWIMSWAM
Jan. 17, 2021— Kieran Smith put on a dominant display in the final of the men’s 400 free, leading from the get-go to finish in a time of 3:49.37, six-tenths off his season-best of 3:48.78 from the U.S. Open. That time ranks him first among Americans and 12th overall in the world this season. On the fact that there’s a little more pressure on him since breaking the 500 free American Record in February, Smith said he’s ready for it heading into Trials. “I like a little bit of pressure,” he said in his post-race interview. “Pressure makes diamonds.” Zane Grothe , who edged out Smith in the 800 free on ...

SWIMSWAM
Jan. 17, 2021— After he stormed home with a final 50 split of 26.54 in the prelims, we knew Kieran Smith would be tough to beat in tonight’s men’s 200 free final. That proved to be true, as Smith led from start to finish, winning in a time of 1:47.36. That swim falls just shy of his 1:47.29 from the U.S. Open, a time that ranks the University of Florida junior 18th in the world for the 2020-21 season. Swimming out in Lane 1, Townley Haas was near the front of the pack throughout the race, moving past Carson Foster and holding off Zane Grothe on the last length to snag second in 1:48.81. Like he did ...

SWIMMING WORLD NEWS
April 3, 2020— Much like the rest of the world, Indiana head coach Ray Looze has had difficulties processing the coronavirus pandemic that has caused normal life to be turned upside down. Looze and his Indiana team lost a chance to compete at the NCAA Championships and he has had to resort to coaching from home while trying to prepare for an Olympic Games that is now another 400+ days away. But he has put a positive spin on it. “Typically we take the month of August as a break time so we are trying to look at now as a break time. March 30, 2020— The coronavirus pandemic had caused the world to go into a frenzy the last few weeks. Athletic events were being cancelled left and right. Facilities were closing down. Sports, what was once a form of escape during times of panic like these, was suddenly completely wiped away from our lives in a matter of what felt like the blink of an eye. With roughly four months still to go to the Olympic Games, the coronavirus pandemic could not have come at a worse time. Athletes everywhere were struggling to find places to train. Gym equipment became nearly impossible to get their hands on. Whi ...

March 9, 2020— Regan Smith earned the most prize money of any athlete for a second-consecutive Pro Swim Series stop, and she now leads the entire series in earnings at $13,000. Smith didn’t even swim the season-opening stop at Greensboro, but put up identical $6500 totals in Knoxville and Des Moines to earn the series lead. Smith is still under amateurism restrictions on how much of that money she can accept, though, given that she still plans to swim for Stanford in the NCAA.
