A scaled-down Shamrock Invite takes on a different format this year, as the timed finals meet will see a total of six sessions over three days. The men swam morning and afternoon sessions yesterday, then wrapped up with a morning session today, and then women will swim this afternoon and tomorrow. Instead of the normal bevy of teams, this iteration of the annual invite featured only the hosts Notre Dame and Missouri State on the men’s side, with the Fighting Irish completing a clean sweep and winning 268-86. The Missouri State Bears reclaimed the MAC title from Miami (OH) last night, winning their 2nd MAC Championship in the past 3 years, and their 3rd in program history. Although their program has since been cut, Eastern Michigan still holds the record for most MAC men’s team titles – 34. Missouri State entered the final day of competition with an 80 point lead over Miami, and they ended the meet with an 80 point lead over Miami.

Missouri State heads into the final day of the 2020 MAC Championships with an 80 point lead over defending champions Miami (OH). The Bears were golden again on Day 3, winning the 200 free, 100 breast, 400 IM, and 400 medley relay. Missouri State sophomore Athur Cury, the 200 IM champion from Day 2, found himself at the top of the podium yet again tonight. Cury won the 200 free, swimming a 1:36.71, to beat out defending champion Pawel Krawczyk (1:37.29), also a sophomore at Missouri State.

Miami began to cut into the Missouri State lead in the next event, the 50 free, where they went 1-2. Sophomore Cole Grosshans won the race with an 19.82, touching first by a large margin of .57 seconds. Senior teammate Nick Ward won Silver with a 20.39. Grosshans was faster in prelims, swimming a 19.79 to break the SIU pool record. His prelims swim was also the 2nd fastest in MAC Championships history.

It was the first night of the Mid-American Conference Men’s swimming championship in Carbondale Illinois. Miami University (Ohio) is looking for a repeat of their victory last year, while everyone else seeks to steal the title.

The 2020 MAC Championships for men kicked off tonight, with the 200 medley relay and 800 free relay. Defending team champion Miami (OH) got the ball rolling, defending their title in the 200 medley relay, before Missouri State took the 800 free relay. Miami and Missouri State ended the first day in a tie, a microcosm of what is likely to be a tough team battle throughout the meet.
