EUGENE, Ore. -- It's always rewarding for high-school student athletes when they finally decide where they'll continue their academic and athletic careers. And for one South Eugene swimmer, making her decision is also fulfilling a childhood dream. KVAL. As a 10-year-old club swimmer, Mia Saenger chose Columbia University as her goal college. Now, seven years later, she fulfilled that promise with her verbal commitment to the Columbia swim team.

Saenger, who owns the Winter Juniors cut in the 100 back, does her club swimming with Team Eugene Aquatics and recently placed 12th in the 100m back at Mount Hood Futures after earning a pair of best times at Mount Hood Sectionals. Last winter, she raced three events at Juniors West before going on to place 12th in the 100 back at Federal Way Sectionals.

Primarily a backstroker and sprint freestyler, Saenger is a district champion and Ohio State 6A (big schools) 3rd-place finisher in both the 50 free (24.05) and 100 back (55.43) from February of this year. In the 100 back, that marked her 2nd-straight 3rd-place finish at that meet.
