After a string of impressive performances throughout the International Swimming League (ISL) season 2 and beyond, Belarusian Ilya Shymanovich earned the 2020 Swammy Award for European Swimmer of the Year. Picture the scene. It’s August 2004 in Rhodes where the Mediterranean meets the Aegean Sea. The sun is shining in a blue sky. Holidaymakers are enjoying the island’s natural beauty and ancient civilisation. Among them are the Adlingtons , parents Steve and Kay along with daughters Chloe and Laura. But their 15-year-old sister is nowhere to be seen. That’s because Becky is in her room in front of the TV completely engrossed in the Olympics taking place a one-hour flight away in Athens.

Yuri Kisil had been so close to making the 100 freestyle final two years in a row at the 2016 Olympics and 2017 Worlds. In Rio, he was 10th in the semi-finals, missing a spot in the final by five hundredths. A year later in Budapest, he was again 10th in the semis, missing a spot in the final by two tenths. Kisil, 24, was training with Tom Johnson at the High Performance Centre in Vancouver, and was seeing great results from his training on the west coast. But after being so close to the 100 free final two years in a row on the world stage, Kisil was getting in his own head.

The McCullagh International concluded on Sunday morning with a host of fine performances from Luke Greenbank, Adam Peaty and Abbie Wood among others while Irish swimmer Mona McSharry left the Bangor Aurora Aquatic and Leisure Complex with six medals.

Duncan Scott fired off a time of 1:47.06 in the final of the 200m free at the McCullagh International in Bangor, Northern Ireland, a 27.81 blast down the last 50 rocketing him into the world top 6 on the early 2020 World Rankings.
