IOC president Thomas Bach has full conviction in the Olympics taking place in Tokyo from July and insists there is no “plan B” leaving cancellation or going ahead as planned the only options. Speculation has mounted in recent weeks that the Games are under threat following the rise in coronavirus cases and the imposition of lockdowns and a state of emergency in Tokyo. The IOC responded to the latter by stating it had full confidence in the measures introduced by the Japanese authorities and that it was “fully concentrated and committed to the safe and successful delivery of the Olymp ...

The closer we get to the 2021 Olympic Opening Ceremonies, the more up in the air the Tokyo Games seem as the waves of the COVID-19 pandemic continue. Tokyo and other parts of Japan are under an emergency order because of a rise in cases with about 4,500 deaths attributed to COVID-19, leading to increased speculation about the possibility of the games being canceled altogether. The start of the vaccine has helped in some parts of the world, but the distribution and time it would take on the list to get to Olympic athletes is not clear and could be very different in different countries ...

Germany’s swimming federation, the DSV, will decide the fate of the German Swimming Championships , an Olympic qualifier event, this week after cancelling all federation aquatics events on Government advice issued late last week under coronavirus (COVID-19) containment measures. The April German Championships are in doubt as the country ramps up its coronavirus response and the virus statistics start to gallop: an estimated 162,687 people have been infected worldwide, with just under half of them in China (81,003 cases). An estimated 6,065 people have died, 3,085 of them in China. In ...

These are unsettling times but what does not change is the ability of elite athletes to produce world-class performances in the face of uncertainty. So it was at the Edinburgh International Swim Meet where Duncan Scott, Tom Dean, Adam Peaty, Luke Greenbank and Jacob Peters all stood atop the podium, rankings rattled. James Guy went 51.84 in the morning heats of the 100 fly before bypassing the final as planned, the focus now on the coming weeks with coach Dave McNulty at the National Centre Bath. Molly Renshaw and Jocelyn Ulyett had a last-length tussle as both women went 2:25 in the ...

Japan’s Government has been told that the contract for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games specifies that the event must be held within 2020, allowing for a postponement from July until further towards the end of the year between October and December should the coronavirus emergency make that a safer option. Cancellation of the Games, as suggested as a more likely outcome than postponement by IOC member Dick Pound a week ago, would be very costly for Japan and all down the chain of commercial interest.

IOC contract allows Japan to postpone #Olympics until the end of 2020
The NCAA’s Sports Science Institute issued memos to its members directing schools toward Centers for Disease Control (CDC) resources as early as late January, urging programs to take necessary precautions.
The contents of NCAA memos were revealed by USA Today amid concerns for safety and the prospect of any outbreak of the coronavirus – COVID 19 throwing the sports calendar into chaos. The NCAA is just about to enter its busiest time of the year.
The news comes as the swimming community is starting to ask about the relation ...

A senior member of the International Olympic Committee said Tuesday that if it proves too dangerous to hold the Olympics in Tokyo this summer because of the coronavirus outbreak, organizers are more likely to cancel it altogether than to postpone or move it. Dick Pound, a former Canadian swimming champion who has been on the IOC since 1978, making him its longest-serving member, estimated there is a three-month window — perhaps a two-month one — to decide the fate of the Tokyo Olympics, meaning a decision could be put off until late May.
