Swimming Canada’s invitation process for the 2021 Olympic Trials has been temporarily put on pause, a source told SwimSwam on Wednesday. Following the initial set of invites sent out on Jan. 6 , the organization has delayed the process for the time being, for unknown reasons, though athletes tell SwimSwam they believe the ongoing pandemic has led Swimming Canada to re-evaluate its plan. Canada , which triggered a chain reaction to get the Olympic Games moved to 2021 as the first nation to declare that it would not send a team to Tokyo 2o20 this July , has called on FINA to shunt the Fukuoka 2021 World Championships and all other events to 2022. Swimming Canada has announced the cancellation of all summer 2020 national events due to the global coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic . The cancellations include the suspension of the Olympic and Paralympic trials that had been slated for rescheduling, and the wipe out of the Canadian Masters Swimming Championships (May 22-24, Etobicoke, Ont.), Canadian Junior Championships (July 22-27, Montreal), and Canadian Swimming Championships (Aug. 6-9, Edmonton). Swimming Canada CEO Ahmed El-Awadi issued a statement on Friday evening responding to recent letters sent from the Canadian Olympic Committee and USA Swimming regarding the potential postponement of the 2020 Olympic Games.
