Cal senior Abbey Weitzeil has been named a finalist for the Sullivan Award presented each year to the top amateur athlete in the United States by the Amateur Athletic Union. Weitzeil is among ten finalists and you can vote here every day until March 30 at 11:59 p.m. EST . Swimmers Beata Nelson and Ryan Hoffer were semi-finalists but did not advance to the finals. It doesn’t take a long gaze at the women’s results from the 1988 Olympics to understand something was amiss in the water. No, it only takes a quick glance to notice the disproportionate number of times East German women stood on the top step of the podium, and the frequency in which they stood on any step during medal ceremonies. Word officially came later, but there was no doubt among athletes, coaches and reporters that the East Germany machine wasn’t merely running on talent.

Picture the scene. It’s August 2004 in Rhodes where the Mediterranean meets the Aegean Sea. The sun is shining in a blue sky. Holidaymakers are enjoying the island’s natural beauty and ancient civilisation. Among them are the Adlingtons , parents Steve and Kay along with daughters Chloe and Laura. But their 15-year-old sister is nowhere to be seen. That’s because Becky is in her room in front of the TV completely engrossed in the Olympics taking place a one-hour flight away in Athens.
